Dr. Warren Howard Powell

Warren H. Powell, age 88, went to be with his Savior Tuesday, September 20th, 2022. He was born on January 1st, 1934 to Leo Powell and Lucille Butler Powell in North Collins, New York. His siblings included Robert and Kenneth Powell (deceased in 2018). He is survived by his wife, Sandra Sletto Powell. Also survived by his (first wife) Micki, sons, Michael Powell (Deb Boyda), David Powell (Jennifer) and daughter, Shari Burnheimer (Bernie), stepson, Dr. Raymond Swisher (Dr. Kara Joyner), stepdaughter, Andrea Stover (Bryan), Kirsten Donohue (Rev. Brian), Grandsons, Danny Burnheimer, Joey Burnheimer, Dylan Powell, Cooper Powell, Peter Powell, Henry Powell, Granddaughters Casey Powell and Jessica Jefferson, Step Grandsons, Tate Stover, Liam Donohue, Nicholas Swisher, Levi Donohue, Chris Simon, and Step Granddaughters, Dana Stover, Emma Donohue, Sophie Donohue and Sadie Donohue. Great-Grandchildren Parker Burnheimer, Wesley Stover, Noah Jefferson and Calvin Burnheimer. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Antioch College, and his PhD at the Ohio State University. He worked for 5 years as a chemist at Dupont in Wilmington, Delaware and for 34 years for Chemical Abstract Service in Columbus, Ohio. He was chosen for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and served for 48 years as a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) which took him to over 30 countries in Europe, China, and Australia. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and leader of the BSA troop at Meadow Park Church of God for many years. His musical involvement included singing in musicals in high school, playing the trumpet including performing “TAPS” as a soloist. He loved singing in choirs in Wilmington and at North Broadway Methodist, Overbrook Presbyterian and Bethel Presbyterian churches. He was very involved in Bible Study in the Anselm Institute and completed the full curriculum of the Bible Study Fellowship, International. He was clerk of Session for a term at Overbrook Presbyterian. Of his many hobbies, he most enjoyed playing golf in Chemical Abstracts leagues and taking numerous trips to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a group of men from Overbrook Presbyterian Church.
