Powell, OH — The world lost a truly bright light on June 18, 2026, when John Warren Ogg, age 82 from Athens, Ohio, peacefully passed away into the arms of his Savior, surrounded by his loving family. John lived a life beautifully rooted in Christ’s greatest commandments—being kind, being funny, and being fiercely loving to everyone he met. At the very center of John’s world was his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy. Their story began decades ago when they first caught each other's eye at the local roller-skating rink. That chance encounter sparked a beautiful, enduring marriage that became the ultimate testament to his loving heart, blessed and sustained by their shared faith. For over five decades, they built a life filled with laughter, unwavering support, and deep devotion. Whether navigating life's challenges or enjoying quiet moments together, John and Nancy were true partners in every sense of the word, modeling a rare and inspiring love story for their entire family. John’s deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ guided everything he did, giving him a true servant's heart. This spirit of care and devotion to others was defined early on during his time in the U.S. Navy. John bravely served two tours in Vietnam, navigating dangerous waters to conduct vital river surveying work. For his meritorious service and dedication to duty, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and two Bronze Star Medals. Just as importantly, he took on the unofficial, heartfelt mission of ensuring his fellow service members received their care packages from home—bringing a vital piece of love, comfort, and connection to those serving alongside him on the front lines. Throughout his professional life, John continued to bring his signature warmth and work ethic to his community. He dedicated many hard-working years to a vending company that proudly served businesses and folks across the Greater Columbus area. Later, he served his fellow Ohioans at the Bureau of Workers' Compensation. In retirement, John found the ultimate joy combining his love for people and his beloved Buckeyes by serving as an OSU Redcoat for 35 incredible years. For over three decades, he welcomed generations of fans into both Ohio Stadium and the Schottenstein Center with his infectious smile, a kind word, and a shared passion for the scarlet and gray. When John wasn’t working or busy looking after the people he loved, he could usually be found masterminding a fierce game of Mexican Train dominoes. Saturdays in the fall were strictly reserved for Ohio State football, and family game nights will never quite be the same without John’s strategic moves and infectious laughter around the table. Whether you knew him for twenty minutes or twenty years, you felt entirely seen and valued in his presence, experiencing a glimpse of Christ's love through his joyful spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and faith that will be carried on by his surviving family, including his wife, Nancy; his children, Matthew and Mikel (Megan), cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and many friends who are bonus family members who loved him dearly. John was welcomed into heaven by his beloved parents, Herald and Janice Ogg; his brother, William Ogg; and his sister, Barbara Wolfe. A service celebrating John's life and entry into eternal glory will be held at Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, located at 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, OH 43065.
