Ellwood W. Lewis

Ellwood W. Lewis, age 96, passed away peacefully at his home in Friendship Village of Dublin. He was predeceased by his father, Lt. Ellwood W. Lewis, Jr, USNR and mother, Anne J (Lauchert), both of whom are interred at Arlington National Cemetery. He is survived by his devoted and caring wife of 73 years, Barbara (Dutton) Lewis; his children: Steven (Ellen) Lewis; Kay (Reeves) (Terry); and Kenneth (Carla) Lewis; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ellwood was born in Detroit, and grew up in Kokomo, Indiana. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College; then and now a College for men. He was Editor-in-Chief of the College newspaper and member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He earned his Juris Doctor from Indiana University School of Law, and was admitted to the Indiana and Ohio bar. He was quietly proud of being the first of the many descendants of his immigrant grandparents to earn both an undergraduate and graduate college degree. After law school he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard; serving as the Communication Officer and Legal Officer aboard an icebreaker. Instead of pursuing a traditional legal career, Ellwood began an Investment Career with the firm of Moors & Cabot in Boston. In 1972 he and his family were invited to Columbus to join the Trust Department of the Huntington National Bank where he applied both his legal and investment skills. He was subsequently named the first President of the Huntington Investment Management Company. Ellwood enjoyed a successful several-degree career and what is now known as Wealth Management. He served as a Past-President of The Columbus Society of Financial Analysts; The Kiwanis Club of Columbus; and The Swim & Raquet Club, where along with other venues, he enjoyed tennis and happy times with his buddies. Ellwood particularly enjoyed his time on the Board of the Columbus Jazz Arts Group during its formative years. Ellwood and Barbara acquired a desire to travel at an early age, and cultivated this itch by enjoying extensive travel with family and friends from Sea to Sea in our beautiful country and to over 50 countries worldwide. But, above all, he enjoyed those precious times life allocated for him to spend with his scattered family to appreciate these young people who were meeting their challenges as they made their way through this complex world. Ellwood’s last decade plus was spent enjoying new friends at Friendship Village of Dublin at the dinner table or over a very competitive round of bridge. A Memorial Service will be held at Friendship Village of Dublin on Saturday, April 18 at 2 PM. .
