Elizabeth "Betty" Smart

Elizabeth “Betty” Ruth Smart, 97, of Powell, Ohio, passed away on September 2, 2026, in Sunbury, Ohio. Betty was born on September 29, 1928, in Columbus, Ohio, to George and Hazel (Halbert) Alexander. On July 3, 1948, she married Robert Leo Smart in Greenup, Kentucky. For more than 40 years, Betty worked as a waitress and professional housekeeper. She also spent many years caring for people with disabilities. Caring for others was not simply something Betty did. It was part of who she was. Through her example, her grandchildren grew up knowing what it meant to help others and to treat everyone with kindness and dignity. Family was at the center of Betty’s life. She often cared for her grandchildren when their parents’ work schedules overlapped, giving them countless hours together and memories they would carry into adulthood. An avid collector of antiques, Betty loved taking her grandchildren to garage sales to search for hidden treasures. As they grew older, she brought them along to help with her cleaning work, teaching them the value of hard work from an early age. Betty was deeply devoted to her faith and was a longtime member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Powell. She also gave more than 25 years of service to the Democratic Party in Delaware and Union counties. She loved spending time with her family and was happiest when everyone came together for a gathering, celebration, or good time. Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her life was defined by faith, family, hard work, and service to others. She cared deeply for the people in her life, and she was deeply loved in return. The example she set and the lessons she passed down will remain part of her family for generations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her infant daughter, Loraine Ellen; her parents, George and Hazel; and her siblings, James, George, Carl, Barbara, Cleo, Donald, Tonda, and Robert. Betty is survived by her daughter, Deloris (David) Demidovich; her grandchildren, Joshua Demidovich, Corey (Meredith) Demidovich, and Elijah (Amber) Demidovich; her great-grandchildren, Declan, Landon, Olivia, and Callan Demidovich; her siblings, Charles and Sandra; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who loved her. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9633 East State Route 37, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 North High Street, Lewis Center, Ohio 43035. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Betty’s memory to the Humane Society of Delaware County. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Country View of Sunbury, Carrie and the team at Bella Care Hospice, and Betty’s special friend Katherine Davison for the care, love, and support they gave her.
