James Edward Schafer

James Edward Schafer, 85, formerly of Columbus and Powell, OH passed away on Friday, November 13 in Venice, FL. He was born in 1935 to Robert Schafer (Mary Lou) and Louise Schafer Finlayson in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated high school from The University School of The Ohio State University in Columbus in 1953. He married his best friend and lifelong companion, Judith Sargent in 1959 in Indiana. He worked in the automobile industry his entire career. He owned several Sunoco service stations until joining Goodyear where he retired in 1981, as an automobile mechanic. He also worked as a truck mechanic at Lane Aviation prior to enjoying his retirement years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed volunteering as a starter at Worthington Hills Country Club, being a snowbird in Lakeland, FL and traveling the U.S. and the world with friends. His interests included bowling, golf and dining out. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Judith. Survived by his daughter Debra (Phil), grandchildren James, Jeremy (Erica), Sarah (Ryan) and great-grandchildren Tristen, Mason, Tyler, Harrison and Mary-Jane. Survived by his brother, Richard (Virginia). Survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 25, at 2pm at Kingwood Memorial Park; 8230 Columbus Pike, US Route 23; Lewis Center, OH 43035. Rev. David Bridgmand, officiating. Arrangements provided by RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL. Masks and social distancing will be required. It will be possible to remain in your car for the brief service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
