May 10, 1928 - March 24, 2021
J. Elizabeth (Donnan) Greenwood passed on March 24, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio. Elizabeth was born May 10, 1928 in Waterville, Ohio. She left the family farm to study teaching at Bowling Green State University, and then settled in Grove City, with her husband George B. Greenwood. In Grove City, Liz taught generations of second-grade students. Throughout her life, she enjoyed family gatherings with her sisters, nieces and nephew. After her retirement and George’s death, she traveled world-wide with her sister, Judith Weaver, and with her sister-in-law Joan Ruddell. Liz moved in 1992 to the Westminster-Thurber community, between downtown Columbus and the Ohio State University. As an early and active Thurber Tower resident, Liz well known to long-time residents and staff. She had a sly wit that sometimes surprised others, and continued to amuse the staff in her recent residence in the nursing center. In Thurber Tower, Liz was proud that her ninth-floor view was made into a stunning postcard by a professional photographer friend. She hosted 4th of July parties with a front-row view of the downtown fireworks. For many years, Liz continued serving young students by volunteering at the nearby elementary school. Liz was an enthusiastic member of the King Avenue Church. She collected donations for the church rummage sale from neighbors and stored them on her balcony. She enjoyed building her wardrobe from rummage sale treasures, an enthusiasm shared with niece, Nancy. Elizabeth benefited from King Avenue’s gay ministry, as she became friends with many of the same-sex couples in the church. Elizabeth joins her husband, George; parents, Julia Smith Donnan and Ray Fisk Donnan; and her sisters, Rachel Donnan Cavanaugh, Priscilla (Pree) Donnan Grim, Judith (Judy) Weaver, and infant brother Jimmie. She is survived by her nieces and nephew: Rachel Cavanaugh Gorby of Avon Lake, OH; Robert Cavanaugh of Peyton, CO; Susan Grim of Toledo, OH; Nancy Grim of Brady Lake, OH; Carol Grim Johnson of Massillon, OH; and Jane Weaver of Marshall, VA; and additional generations: Peyton Cavanaugh; Kate Feinberg Robins and Ahanu Robins; Joseph Grim Feinberg and Konrad Emil Feinberg – as well as her friends at King Avenue Church, Westminster-Thurber, and Grove City. The family thanks the staff and residents of Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber for being her community and support since 1992. We particularly appreciate the care and support in recent years as her medical needs and COVID restrictions decreased her ability to participate in the broader community and increased her need for direct care. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 11 am at the King Avenue Church (masks and social distancing are required) – or join through live stream at www.kingave.org. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Huggins Fund at King Avenue Church or to Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber. Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
