May 28, 1938 - August 15, 2016
Donald C. Mahan was welcomed home by his God and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 15, 2016. He was the son of Clarence and Irene Mahan and was born on May 28, 1938, in East Chicago, IN. After living in Hessville for a few years, his family moved to a farm near Lowell, where he graduated from high school in 1956. He then obtained his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Purdue University before working as a County Youth Agent in Sullivan, IN, where he met and married Amy Jo Osburn before returning to Purdue for graduate school. After completing his M.S. degree there and his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, he began his professional career at The Ohio State University in 1969. His responsibilities included both teaching and research, but unquestionably his foremost love was his many different swine nutrition research projects. He was honored throughout his career with many awards, culminating with his receiving the 2016 FASS-AFIA Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award given for his lifetime production of innovative research that significantly benefitted the livestock and feed industries. He mentored many graduate students while at OSU, authored or co-authored more than 175 refereed journal articles and over 400 other publications, and personally presented his research results more than 365 times around the world in 50 countries and the United States. He was a member of many professional organizations and was an active reviewer for several nutrition journals. In addition to his wife, Jo, Don is survived by three daughters—Melanie Mahan (E. Lansing, MI), Jean (Eric) Snider (Hilliard, OH), and Laurie (Eric) Vendel (Lewis Center, OH), ten grandchildren, one grandson-in-law, and one brother, Gene (Marsha) Mahan, of Morocco, IN. As a family we were blessed by him, and we’ll miss him dearly. Don had a delightfully unique sense of humor which was greatly enjoyed by all who knew him. He was actively involved in many church ministries throughout his lifetime, and a member of the Linworth Baptist Church in Worthington where a Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016 with Pastor George Hattenfield and Pastor Brent Miller Officiating. A private family interment will follow in Kingwood Memorial Park. The family will welcome friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1550 Old Henderson Road, Ste. N-160, Columbus, OH 43220 in memory of Don. Arrangements by the Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, 450 W. Olentangy Street, Powell, OH. 43065. To send condolences to the family please visit www.rutherfordfuneralhomes.com.
