Corinne Velora (Gilbert) Iverson

Corinne Velora (Gilbert) Iverson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and longtime resident of Worthington, died peacefully at home July 11, 2015 surrounded by family after a long illness at age 88. She was preceded in death by her late husband John L. Iverson, parents Lester Gilbert and Velora (Huff) Gilbert, her daughter Corinne Mousoulias, formerly of Sylvania, Ohio, her sister Anne Bluhm, formerly of Laguna Niguel, California and brother, Richard Gilbert, formerly of Santa Ana, California. Corinne was born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and raised in Sturgeon Bay and Wausau, Wisconsin. She is survived by daughter, Anne Fischer and her husband, Steven of Sudbury, Massachusetts, daughter, Barbe Iverson of Worthington, son, John Iverson and his wife, Lori, of Fort Myers, Florida, her grandchildren, Catharine Blake, Stephanie Thomas, Kristin Weatherford, Scott Fischer, Jaclyn Gerakios, Craig Fischer, Sunny Iverson, Gregory Mousoulias and Sean Iverson, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Corinne graduated from the all-women’s Downer College of Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she met her future husband, John, while participating in a school course requirement. They spent their early married years in greater Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1954 when she was mother of three children, Corinne entered the Mrs. Wisconsin contest with the intention of obtaining a vacation for her family to Florida. She indeed won and became Mrs. Wisconsin of 1954. She went on to compete for Mrs. America Pageant in Ormond Beach, Florida and was the 6th runner up. She retired from the limelight and continued to raise her growing family. She briefly became a real estate agent while still in Wisconsin. She and John lived in Olympia Fields, Illinois and Warren, Pennsylvania before moving to Sylvania, Ohio and finally to Worthington, Ohio. While living in Sylvania, she worked for social services helping families and foster children. When she moved to Worthington, she fulfilled a life-long goal by returning to school at Otterbein College to become a registered nurse. Corinne and John enjoyed an active busy social life with friends and family scattered throughout the United States. They were married for 62 years. Their children were able to surprise them with a party for their 50th wedding anniversary. Her warm words of wisdom, kindness and unconditional love will be missed by all who know her.
