Chester C. Winter Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Chester C. Winter, M.D. died May 3, 2022 of natural causes. He was born June 2, 1922 in Cazenovia, New York to parents Rev. Chester C. Winter. Sr. and Cora Martin Winter, minister and school teacher respectively, whom he loved and admired deeply. He graduated from Lamont, Iowa Consolidated High School and received his B.A. (1942) and M.D. (1946) degrees from the University of Iowa. He served a medical internship and residency in Indianapolis Methodist and St. Luke's Methodist (Cedar Rapids, IA) Hospitals. After 5 1/2 years in the Army Medical Corp (Captain), he performed general medical practice in Redlands, California. He took his general surgery and urology residency at the University of California, Los Angeles Hospitals (1952-57) and served on their staff for three years. In 1960 he was appointed Professor and Director of Urology at The Ohio State University Hospitals where he was also designated Louis Levy Professor of Urology. He was the co-inventor of Radioisotope Renography and the inventor of Radioisotope Cystography. He developed an important urological procedure called the "Winter Shunt." He belonged to numerous national and international medical societies, including the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and North Central Section of the American Urological Association, to which he contributed many articles, chapters, and textbooks. He received numerous honors for his teaching, research and service. He retired from medical research, teaching and practice in 1988. His retirement activities included golf, gardening, moderating a Civil War Round Table at the Worthington Senior Center and lecturing on a variety of subjects. He taught American and Ohio history and published 9 books on these subjects. He is survived by wife Mary Gnezda Winter, three children: Paul Winter (Jill), Ann Winter Sokoloff (Ken) and Jane Winter (Suzanne Rounds); three grandchildren: Joshua and David Sokoloff and Jason Rounds; three step-children: Nicole Gnezda (John Snouffer), Therese Gnezda (Gardner Peckham) and Eric Gnezda (Victoria). He was preceded in death by his wife Cary Jones Winter and his two sisters: Margaret Brown and Mary Lou Nowak. A memorial service will be held Sat. June 18, 2022, 10:00 am at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High St, Worthington, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Griswold Senior Center, 777 High St. Worthington, OH 43085.
