Verle Wilson Neer

Dublin Resident Verle Wilson Neer, who served in World War II before becoming an accomplished salesman and business owner, died Monday, July 6, 2015. He was 94. Neer served his country from 1942-1945 as a flight engineer on US Army Air Corps bombers in the European and African theaters. After the war, he flourished in sales, ultimately founding and running the Dublin-based V&B Distributing Company for 30 years. Born in 1920 to the late Charles J. and Weltha Neer, he was the youngest of five children, (three of whom died before him: Hilda Mae, Branson and Maxine). He attended a one-room, country schoolhouse and graduated from Bellefontiane High School in 1938. While in the war, Neer earned a myriad of awards including the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. While serving in the military, he married the late Aileen Neer in 1943 and had three daughters during their 23-year marriage. Their youngest child, Nellie Jean, died at birth. In 1965, he married Betty Jo Neer and had two more daughters. He was a long-time member of the Dublin Community Church and lifetime member of the American Legion. The always-energetic Neer loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips over the years. He will be missed by his wife of 49 years, Betty Jo, his sister Audrey Hurley, daughters Verleen (Calvin) Massey, Helen (John) Abjanic, Betty (Frank) Sugar and Debbie Pond; his grandchildren Erin (Brian) Hiro, Megan (Tim) Miller, Chris and Katie Pond, Grant and Evan Sugar; his great-grandchildren Jack and Lily Hiro, and Mazey and Mia Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
