Susan Jane Secrest

Susan Jane Secrest of Beechwold, Ohio was born on June 26, 1951 and passed away on November 5, 2016 in her home. Her parents, William and Mary Secrest, are deceased. She is survived by her loving brother, Thomas Secrest, a printmaker who is retired from the art faculty of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, devoted cousins Dixie Secrest Lodge, Sheryl Secrest Gardner, Raoma Secrest, Jennie Secrest Wilson and their families, her dedicated caregiver, Patricia Wolford, many dear friends and her beloved West Highland Terriers, Brodie and Molly. Entwined in Susan's life is the remembrance of the Shafer sisters: Edna, Susan's grandmother, and `Alma, Rose, and Gladys. Twenty-five and counting Shafer cousins will continue to have special memories of her. Sue attended Dominion Middle School and graduated from Whetstone High School in 1969. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University, with a bachelor's degree as well as a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She worked for many years at the Ohio State College of Dentistry before retiring to care for her parents. Sue was passionate about gardening. She landscaped and manicured her large yard, which was filled with bushes, trees, roses and an abundance of other flowers. She loved dogs, particularly Westies, and owned several throughout her lifetime. She traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, collected art and antiques, enjoyed decorating her home, and was a selfless caregiver of family and friends. Also an accomplished cook, she enjoyed entertaining and creating memorable events, particularly during the holidays. A friend remembers her Christmas party tradition of dancing to "Jingle Bell Rock." She had a great sense of humor and a dry wit. Susan was a member of an OSU retirement group and belonged to Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where she of-ten volunteered. She and her dogs regularly visited a retirement home and provided residents with company and affection. Calling hours are 4-7 PM, Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High St., Worthington, OH 43085. Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 16, 2016 with an additional hour of visitation one prior at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 West Henderson Rd., Columbus, OH 43214.
