Robert D. "Bob" Garrison

Robert D. (Bob) Garrison, 85, of Columbus passed away from complications following heart surgery on December 24, 2015, at Kobacker House surrounded by family. Born May 20, 1930, in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, he graduated from South High School in 1948 and earned BS and MA degrees from The Ohio State University. In 1953 he entered the U.S. Air Force where he was a First Lieutenant and served as an air traffic controller in Germany. Bob started his long career in education as a teacher at Roosevelt Junior High School followed by administrative appointments at a variety of Columbus Public Schools. He served as the first principal for the new Independence Junior/Senior High School when it opened in 1975 where he remained until he retired. After retirement he became involved with Cub Scouts and served as a Den Leader and the Cub Master for the troop at Winterset Elementary School. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Eleanor, his son Mark of Columbus, his brother Amos (Ruth) of Boise, ID, his sister-in-law Jane Garrison of Bryn Mawr, PA, his brother-in-law John Arnold of Cleveland, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents the Honorable Amos and Lillie Garrison, his father and mother-in law Dr. Norris and Blanche Arnold, his siblings and their spouses, Jackson Garrison (Helen), James Porter Garrison (Thelma), Paul Garrison, and Jean Chawla (Sudershan) as well as his niece Michaelann Arnold. The family would like to extend their heart-filled gratitude and praise to the staff at Kobacker House who create a magical environment for patients and families in difficult times. Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 3rd from 2:00 – 5:00PM at the RUTHERFORD CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington, OH 43085. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 4, 2016 at Maize Manor United Methodist Church, 3901 Maize Road, Columbus, OH 43224, with a musical prelude beginning at 10:45 a.m. A private interment will take place at a later date. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Kobacker House, c/o Ohio Health Foundation, 180 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 in Bob’s memory.
