Peter Shears, Jr.

Peter Shears Jr. of Powell OH passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the age of 91. The last days of his life were filled with the love of family and friends. Pete was born on December 11, 1932, to Peter Sr. and Mary (Fedora) Shears in Lansford, PA. In high school, Pete was a star football player and was inducted into the Carbon County Hall of Fame, PA. He was the first in his family to attend college securing a football scholarship to Yale University, graduating nearly 75 years ago. He then continued to play football while serving in the Army for a couple of years after college. Pete met the love of his life Eleanor on a summer day in their early 20’s. They were married in the Byzantine Catholic faith in August of 1957 and recently celebrated their 66th anniversary. After a long career in business management, he retired from Mettler Toledo and found a passion for serving on the board of Cornerstone Academy and Columbus Humanities Arts and Technology Academy, two local charter schools for over 20 years. Faith and the love of God guided Pete throughout his entire life. He loved the church community and participated fully in every way he could. “Everything in moderation” was his mantra influencing his daily life choices. Pete was a kind and generous soul who never missed an opportunity to socialize with friends and new acquaintances, always adding a sense of humor. He was passionate about his life with Ellie, working together with pride to provide a beautiful home and gathering space for a growing family. Pete was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Peter Shears Sr., sister Irene Shears, brother Jerome Shears and his son Peter Douglas Shears. Pete is survived by his loving wife Eleanor (Hedesh); daughters Barbara Shears, Renee (Sam) Raisch, Margo (Myron) Shapiro, daughter-in-law Laura Shears and six grandchildren: Anna (Andy) Smith, Mary Mohr, Alli Shears, Lizzie Shears, Maggie Shears, Peter Shears and two great grandchildren Hudson and Cooper Smith. Visitation will be at the Rutherford Funeral Home, 450 W. Olentangy St., Powell, OH on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 10700 Liberty Rd., Powell OH. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 North High Street, Lewis Center, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Joan of Arc Church, 10700 Liberty Road, Powell, Ohio 43065 in memory of Peter Shears Jr. .
