Lucille N. Baker

Nellie Lucille McClaskey Baker, 96, of Columbus, died Saturday November 16, 2013. Nellie had a very full life from the day she was born on July 27, 1917, in Glenwood, West Virginia. She was the daughter of an Irish immigrant, Hamilton McClaskey, who came to America as a young man with his father. He met and married Nellie’s mother, Ella Nipps and had two daughters with Nellie being the youngest and last surviving. When Nellie was 14 years old, she lied about her age saying she was 16 in order to secure a job with the Shoe Factory in Huntington, WV. She worked there for many years, met and married her first husband, Chester Lewis Clay and raised four daughters: Lois Ann, Doris Jean, and Linda Lou, who have all preceded her in death, and Diana Louise Rogers who resides in Dunbar, WV. Nellie later went to work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV. In 1984, Nellie married her one true love, Dale Waid Baker, which is when she moved from Huntington, WV, to Columbus, OH. Both Nellie and Dale were active members in their church, Life Church of God at Easton, until their age prevented them from serving. When Dale passed away in January of 2012, Nellie gave up on life. He was the light of her world and she had no desire to live without him. Along with her daughter Diana, Nellie leaves behind Dale’s children, Margaret Staley and family, Larry Baker and family, and three grandchildren, Mark Jackson, Sherrie Hensley, and Darran Jackson and a host of friends. As Nellie’s only granddaughter, I would especially like to thank the staff at Outlook Manor where my granny spent her last months as well as the staff of Hospice Services at Methodist Elder Care with special thanks to Megan, Cynthia, Amanda and Michelle, I couldn’t have made it through these last months without you girls. Funeral is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 20, at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington with visitation one hour prior to the service with Reverend Michelle Baker officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to Hospice Services at Methodist Elder Care, 124 Dorchester Square, Suite 200, Westerville, OH 43081.
