Joyce P Pike

Joyce Pauline Pike, age 84 of Rhinebeck, New York, died April 24, 2025. She was born on August 13, 1940 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Paul Raymond and Betty Jane (Gleichman) Pike. Preceded in death by her father, Paul R. Pike of Indianapolis, mother, Betty Jane (Gleichman) Pike of Columbus; brother and sister-in-law, Roy W. and Karen Y. Pike of Upper Arlington. Survived by nephews, Paul R. Pike and Andrew R. Hicks of Florida; Kevin B. Pike and Robin M. Touchet of New York; and Scott M. and Hilary A. Pike of Washington; great nephew, Rhys Pike; great nieces, Claire, Sylvie and Daphne Pike, and many friends. Joyce graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1958 and attended the University of Colorado and Ball State Teacher’s College from 1958-1962. She received a master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1969. Joyce taught secondary and middle school students in Colorado and Minnesota from 1962-1985 and worked with adults to pass their GED requirements. She taught English as a Second Language to immigrants and also became a trainer of adult tutors of ESL. Joyce wrote a curriculum for mentally handicapped adults titled “Experiencing Mathematics to Work,” and she attended the 10th World Congress on Reading in Hong Kong in 1984. Literacy and education where her life’s work. Joyce moved to Columbus with her mother in 1986 where she was an active member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star. Joyce was a long-time member and Past Matron of Lorraine Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, past Treasurer of the 17th District Association, and was a past President of the District 17 Cancer Project. After the death of her brother and sister-in-law in 1990, Joyce put her own life on hold and helped her nephews navigate finishing their high school and college years. Joyce cared for her mother until her death in 2007 and has remained committed to her family her entire life. Joyce moved to the Hudson Valley, New York in 2018 to be closer to family, where she was a member in St. John’s Reformed Church in Upper Red Hook, and the Old Dutch Village Garden Club. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 17th at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home in Worthington, Ohio at 10:00, followed by a procession and burial in Union Cemetery (Section #8, Lot #77, Grave: 1st on North). A reception will follow at Summit Chase, 1000 Urlin Ave., Grandview Heights, Ohio from 12:00-2:00. Joyce actively gave to over 20 charities every year.
