Rev. James H. McCormack, Jr.

MCCORMACK JR. God wrapped his arms around his faithful servant, Rev. James H. McCormack, Jr., on November 13, 2013. Jim was born on February 10, 1929 in Cincinnati to Fannie Belle and James Howard McCormack Sr. He was a 1946 graduate of Western Hills High School and known for his endless helpfulness. Upon graduating from the University of Cincinnati, Jim attended Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Following his ordination in 1954, he served congregations in Spencerville, Mt. Auburn, Christ UMC of Columbus, and Hamilton First UMC. In 1973, Jim was appointed District Superintendent of the Athens District, and 2 years later became the Treasurer of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served in that position until his retirement in 1994. Jim was instrumental in overseeing 3 church building projects throughout his ministry and loved all of the saints he worked with over the years. He was a devoted sports fan to his Reds, Bengals and Buckeyes. Jim is survived by Jerry, his loving wife of 64 years, and four children - Pam (Darrell) Chevalier of Pataskala, David (Teresa) and Scott (Sandy) of Westerville, and Jill (Karl) Oberer of Sandusky. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Matthew, Kerri, Amanda, Beth, Jason, Brett, Jennifer, Ashley, Brittany, Katie, Daniel, David and Liz and 13 great-grandchildren: Colin, Mason, Jacob, Makayla, Nicholas, Emalene, Cole, Drew, Hunter, Alleigh, Will, Owen, and Madison. In addition, Jim is survived by two sisters, Rosie (Fred) Mitchell and Lorie Schreibeis of Cincinnati, many nieces and nephews, and friends too numerous to name. Thanks to special restaurant friends Deneea (O’Charleys) and Angela and Anna (Bob’s). Many thanks to the Riverside Hospital nurses on 6 Blue and 7 Orange, the 300 wing of New Albany Gardens, and Amity Hospice. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by infant son James Howard McCormack III, brother Ralph, and sister Martha Arnold. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until services at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Church of the Messiah. Rev. Jim Wilson will officiate. Additional visitation will follow in McVay Hall.
