Dorthea C. Burkhardt

Dorthea C. Burkhardt, age 101, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor surrounded by her loving family. Dorthea was born March 22, 1911 in Woodsfield, Ohio to the late Henry and Bertie Bell (Longden) Ackerman. Dorthea and her siblings attended Halfway School, a one-room school, located between Woodsfield and Lewisville, Ohio. When Dorthea went to High School she lived with uncle and aunt, Charlie and Lydia Brubach because it was too far to walk to the High School. After High School she came to Columbus to attend the Lillian Johnson Beauty School where she also worked for a year. Then went back to work in her uncle's drug store in Woodsfield. Dorthea met her future husband Francis Burkhardt at a square dance. They both loved to square dance, and were married January 9, 1933. After they married, they bought a little farm, and then moved to Columbus in 1937. Dorthea worked at Sabino’s Drugstore. She was a member of the Holy Name Christian Mothers and Holy Name Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, Dorthea was preceded in death by her loving husband, Francis in 1998; brothers, Abraham and Francis Ackerman; sisters, Delores Thompson, Thelma Weber, Helen Pickens, and Pauline Diamond; grandson, Christopher Haney; great grandsons, Ryan and Jonathan Hansen. Dorthea is survived by her three children, Mary Janet Haney, Charles (Sandy) Burkhart, and John David Burkhardt. She was so proud of her 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by three loving friends, Jack Haney, Nancy Burkhart, and Carol Burkhardt. The family would also like to thank the staff at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, and especially the staff on 4 East for their loving kindness shown to Dorthea while she was a resident. A Latin Requiem High Mass will be Celebrated 10:00a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Chapel of Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, 5199 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio 43213 with The Reverend Kevin Lutz, Celebrant. Family and friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 15th at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio 43085 and one hour prior to the Mass at the Chapel on Thursday. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, 5199 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio 43213.
