Dorothy Mager

Dorothy “Dot” Mager 3-11-1934 – 5/1/2026 Worthington resident since 1975, I was born in Schofield Barracks, Near Honolulu Hawaii, to parents Catherine and Carl Fischer. My dad was in the army (Major). I attended 10 schools before graduating from the American High School in Heidelberg, Germany. I attended the U. of Maryland in Munich, Germany and College Park, Md., and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. Then off to fascinating Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn advertising agency on Madison Ave. in New York City, where I worked as a secretary for 4 and ½ years in the Public Relations Dept.. I met the love of my life, Hal Mager Jr., in 1957. We both belonged to the Catholic Youth Organization. We were married Aug, 23, 1958 in Westfield, N.J., and I spent 60 and ½ years with my sweetheart forever until his death Feb. 5, 2019, which broke my heart. Our greatest joy in life was our beloved three children and their families: Hal Mager (Karen), Catherine Thorsen (Doug), and Barbara Nobile (Frank); terrific eight grandchildren: Ashley and Alex Mager, Allison, Michael, and Emily Thorsen; Maria, Lauren, and Rachael Nobile. We adored our precious family, and all the memorable times we shared together which were bountiful. Hal and I felt it was a blessing to now have our kids living only a few miles from us. I have lived in 23 different places in 13 states, and 3 years in Germany. It was exhilarating, educational, and fun making 45 visits to foreign countries. And there was a feeling of thankfulness touring 35 states in beautiful America. Hal enjoyed traveling too. I retired from Call Insurance Agency (Worthington) as an agent, and Huntington National Bank (Worthington Hills Branch) as a Personal Banker/ Investment Rep.. Hal and I were original members of the Northwest Gourmet Group which kept us in the loop of entertaining for 42 years. The Bowerman Street Block Party in June had always been very special to us. We were thankful to have great friends and neighbors. Every Lent before Easter we looked forward to the fish fry dinners at various Catholic Churches. And also the Labor Day festivals at St. Michael’s Church and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, plus the St. Joan of Arc Festival the last weekend in August. The Irish Festival in Dublin the first weekend in August was a delightful event. Attending the Ohio State Fair, Oktober Fest, and Worthington Days was a blast. We went to all the musicals and flying events at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Hal had his pilot license, and he would rent a plane so we could fly to various places such as Kelleys Island. Going to Vaudvilities, the theater, plus rooting for the Buckeyes with friends was a treat. The Columbus area was such a great place to live and appreciate. All the fabulous trips with our kids, their families and relatives to Marco Island, Myrtle Beach, the Outer Banks, Lake Norris, Las Vegas, Sarasota, West Point, Caribbean were memorable. I was active in my favorite two social and philanthropic organizations: Women Today, and the Worthington Women’s Club. I met lots of wonderful people, and had good times with all the group activities, especially the book clubs, art study group, luncheons. In addition to my parents and husband, I was predeceased by my brother Carl Fischer Jr. (Lt. Col. retired, West Point grad) and his wife Mary Lou, and special Aunt Gertrude Fischer. I am survived by my family, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Loved them all. I told my family I was writing my own obituary. In lieu of donations, please go out with family or friends, and just enjoy living each day of your life. I really cherished my time on earth! The Celebration of My Life will be private. I’ll be seeing you.
