Bruce D. Schaeffer

Bruce Schaeffer, age 72, of Columbus, died peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Forest Hills Center. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Boltz Schaeffer; and father, John G. Schaeffer; his sisters, Patricia Keim and Doris Wissler; his sisters-in-Iaw, Janet Schaeffer and Lois Rivard; and brother-in law, George Wissler. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joan Schaeffer; and his daughters, Susan Holm (John) of Beavercreek, Ohio and Karen Czapla (Richard) of South Windsor, Connecticut; and four grandchildren, David and Sarah Holm and Jeffrey and Sophie Czapla; two brothers, Jack and Jay Schaeffer; brothers-in-Iaw, Tom Keim and Tom Rivard; and sister-in-law, Debra Shea. Bruce was a graduate of Reading High School, 1958 and Albright College, BS 1962. He also did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University. Bruce was an Assistant Actuary for Monumental Life Insurance Company in Baltimore, Maryland. He was employed by Columbus Life Insurance Company from 1972 to 1996 when he retired as Vice President, Financial Management. Bruce was an active member of the Worthington United Methodist Church, and for many years was a member of the Searchers Sunday school class as well as other spiritual groups. More recently, he was a caregiver in the Stephen Ministry. Bruce volunteered as an English (ESL) tutor for the Columbus Literacy Council. Bruce was a member of the Parkinson's Support Group of Central Ohio. Bruce was very devoted to his family, and loved the simple pleasures of life, some of which were the beauty of nature, walking, the beach, travel, and most of all his extraordinary grandchildren. Bruce was a man of curiosity and intellect, and enjoyed reading, math and word games, history, and current events. He had a passion for music, especially classical guitar. The family thanks Forest Hills Center for his fine care in the last 10 months. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Worthington United Methodist Church with Rev. Cyndy Garn officiating.
