Ann Katherine Schafer DeVries

Ann Katherine Schafer deVries, age 95, went home to be with the Lord on November 1, 2022 at Taylor Springs Health Campus in Columbus, Ohio. She was born August 21, 1927, to the late William Jacob Schafer and Esther Katherine Myers. Kathy spent her early years with her family in Bexley, OH, and her middle school years in Marietta, OH, cared for by her father’s family. Her mother and she moved to Clintonville for her high school years where she graduated from North High School in 1945. Her first job was as a switch-board operator. She retired from Columbus Public Schools after many years of service. She loved her family very deeply and her great delight was in the dinners, birthdays, Christmas events, and Valentine’s Day parties for the family every year with special heart cookies that she made. Besides being a good baker, she wanted to be remembered as “She made good soup.” In her later years, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a special enjoyment. Her childhood home of Marietta, OH and her friends there were also important to Kathy. Kathy was a very active member of Indianola Presbyterian Church for over 80 years. She organized and helped out with many church dinners and other fellowship events over the years. Preceded in death by husbands, Norman L. deVries and Dr. Don L. Curtis, brother William H. (Barbara and Joyce) Schafer, son-in-law Dr. Kurt Ayers and nephew, John Schafer. She is survived by children: Cynthia Ayers and David (Kristy) deVries; stepchildren: Martha (Gary) Gleckler, Marilyn (Mike) Ziegler, Donna (Sherry) Curtis and Stephen (Liz) Curtis; grandchildren: Alan (Sarah) deVries, Benjamin (Katherine) Ayers, Rachel (Jonathon) Bradshaw, Bethany Collier (Allan Labanowski), Allison Collier, and 11 (almost 12) great-grandchildren; nieces: Susan (Ken) Wiegman, Sarah Schafer, Peggy Schafer (Andrew Jacobson); nephew: Jacob (Laura) Schafer, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, from 1pm to 4pm and Memorial Service at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, on the following Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 1pm, officiated by the Rev. Trip Porch. Private family burial at Glen Rest Memorial Estates in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Indianola Presbyterian Church.
