George Ann Castel, age 76, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2010 at Riverside Hospital after a short illness. Formerly of Kalamazoo, MI and Hillsdale, MI, she had recently moved to Mayfair Village Retirement Community in Columbus to be near family. George Ann was born in Fairmont, WV to the late George E. and Eunice T. Bennett. She was a graduate of Fairmont State College and did her graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught in both the public schools and at Western Michigan University. She was past president of the Hillsdale Woman’s Club and served on the vestry of Holy Trinity Anglican Parish several times. She was a marvelous cook, skilled knitter and needle pointer, and a voracious reader. Her love of reading has been passed down to her children and she enjoyed giving and sharing books with all those she knew. George Ann is survived by her husband of 50 years, Albert; her daughter, Ann Davis (Kevin) of Columbus; her son, Charles, of New York City; and her three grandchildren: Shea, Noah and Drew Davis. Several cousins also survive her including special cousins Linda Bell of Fairmont, WV and Marjorie Tomko of Irwin, PA. A life-long lover of animals, she will be missed by her two cats, Trevor and Roddy. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Riverside Hospital for their gentle and compassionate care and to her many friends at Mayfair Village who made her time in Columbus so special. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hillsdale, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church, 263 Spring St., Hillsdale, MI 49242 or in her name to your local Humane Society.
